Oil, Flashe, ink and water on canvas, 4.6 ft x 10 ft
Inspired by the memory of swimming in the dark, pine-reflective lakes and rivers of Upstate NY—and the hope of one day experiencing the ocean—this painting continues that journey nineteen years later in Zanzibar, where turquoise, cyan, teal, pink, and pearl waters surrounded me. Broad, sweeping strokes and layered textures capture both darkness and radiance, reflecting my search not for another color of water but for a new inner horizon: the act of reaching toward what I once feared was beyond my grasp. Within these oils and inks lies the hope that even a shadowed mind can blaze with unforeseen light, pulling me beneath the surface, where hope remains half-buried yet eternally alive.
