Looking at a majestic wave rolling in one journeys into something that begins on the surface, but which then pulls you in deeper and deeper, opening into an unfathomable space beyond. One reaches a surprising, almost figurative reality inside the waterprint, much like looking into swirling water. There’s a multi-layered play of colours in the more translucent parts - pinks, greens and yellows - surrounded by a peaceful pale blue.

The original source materials are photos the artist took while travelling in Zanzibar on the Indian Ocean. Phil in Zanzibar 1 is part of series of twelve waterprints - each one a new history suspended in time
